A curriculum-based puppet program offers children in public and private school systems and civic groups an increased awareness of eating disorders. By proactive measures, this program educates young people, builds self-esteem, and hopes to prevent the development of future eating disorders in children.
After much research on eating disorders, the Junior League of Chattanooga was surprised at the number of individuals affected by eating disorders. Eight to ten million females and one million males suffer from some type of eating disorder, and the number of younger children concerned with diet and body image is rising.
Because the Junior League believes that well-balanced family structures lead to a healthier community, the League promotes the early intervention and prevention of problems affecting families. Eating disorders are, in increasing numbers, one of the problems families face.
